Augmented Educational Repair for Intuitive APU Logic
Awarded 2nd place at Honeywell’s Fall 2025 Devils Invent Challenge: The Incredible [Turbo] Machine, A.E.R.I.A.L. is an Augmented Reality (AR) maintenance and training support tool designed for Honeywell APU systems.
During the competition, our team chose to address the following problem:
“How might we streamline maintenance and training procedures to create a more responsive, hands-on approach while minimizing labor costs”
The result was a three-part solution, featuring:
- 3D Augmented Reality Simulation that employs a hands-on, active learning approach to maintenance procedures, showing the disassembly and reassembly of APUs and allowing the user to easily locate parts, part numbers, and other important information.
- Real-Time Image Detection based on existing Honeywell 360 Vision technology that uses a webcam to provide failure analysis of UV dipped components and improve technician intuition while additionally serving as a method for active part identification.
- AI Assistant Integration that uses Honeywell Forge’s database to provide active feedback to the user, allowing trainees to ask questions and receive feedback in real time without the need to shadow an experienced technician or sort through documentation.
Within 36 hours, our team developed a web-based prototype of the AR environment including a 3D CAD simulation using Fusion 360, real-time image detection footage from a webcam, and a conversational AI assistant using Gemini API. We then presented our solution and working model to a panel of Honeywell engineers and stakeholders.
